laptop advice

Hi everyone,

My Dad is looking to buy a laptop computer for some photo editing, surfing and maybe some music editing. He called me to get some advice as I know a little about desktops but clueless about laptops.
Here is what he had it narrowed down to-

Toshiba

Compaq

Could someone please tell me which one has the fastest processer as I am not sure of the difference between the AMD and Intel speeds.

Both computers can be purchased new for $600-$650 (only used the above sites for details-not sure where he is purchasing

thanks

Personally I have a Compaq desktop and the custer support is absolutely horendous!
All the people are indian and I can't understand what they're saying >> (no offense to indian people)
Also sempron isn't as good as core solo (sempron has 16x less L2 cache and only 2x L1 cache) and also if your dad isn't doing any games, then I would go with intel processors
The clock speed on the AMD is higher, but Intel would still be better by far, so go with the Toshiba (compaq sux)

Also if you just spend around $1000 you can get a Core Duo lappy!

Oh the joys of outsourcing....I recently watched a "30 Days" episode on FX and apparently customer support jobs are one of the hottest jobs in India.

As far as Compaq laptops I think they are alright, at least until the warranty goes out. I bought a Compaq x1000 for school back in '03 and had no problems with it until the 1 year warranty went out, which was when my hard drive died (it was a Hitachi hard drive so it was bound to happen anyway). After replacing the hard drive I had no problems with it until the system board went out recently. It worked great for 3 years, which is about the average lifespan of a laptop so I'm not complaining.
