Laptop advice

I have been interested in buying a high end gaming laptop for a while now, and after searching online and reading reviews I narrowed my choices down to either the Dell XPS M2010 or the XPS M1710. When comparing the two, most reviews said that the M1710 was a better buy because of its superior video card. But I am sort of leaning towards the M2010. My question is: Couldn't i just get the M2010 an buy a better video card for it? Also, if you think I shouldn't get either laptop go ahead and give me another suggestion. I wouldn't like to pay much more than $5,000.

i think you should get the m1710 if you want to spend that much money for a high end lpatop...i know that the m2010 looks a lot better, but the hardware inside the m1710 is usually more superior then the m2010...both these laptops are highly customizable so you may be able to find a m2010 with the same GPU as a m1710...and you never know which gpu can go with which laptop so i wouldnt recommend buying them seperately...just customize it at dell.com or some other store to fit your needs

If it was my choose i would never BUY A XPS FRom dell because it made cheap. I got one for a demo at work i had to work on it more that i got to play on it the graphics card was cheap i they should of got a 64 mb then a navideo 128mb The intel core duo over clocked when you played call of duty 2

Dont Support Dell XPS Laptops

I am sure people are going to disagree with me on this, but get a mac book pro. Why you ask?

1) It runs windows, better than a lot of PC laptops
2) It can run windows apps natively in OS X via APIs via CrossOver
3) It can run OS X and has built in audio/video editing apps
4) Has a super high resell value

I can testify to all these things because I have loaded windows on an intel based mac, and yes it runs better than a lot of PC based laptops. I installed and played BF2 on a mac pro desktop and it ran it better than a lot of PCs I have played. Resell value, put it this way. I paid 500 dollars for an apple laptop 3 years ago, and I sold it for 375 dollars not too long. So in three years it only dropped about 125 dollars in value. I know that people buy macs and sell them about a year later and only lose a few hundred max dollars on them. The return investment is much better than any PC market. OS X and out of the box apps let you edit film, produce a DVD, render audio, all of these things a PC can not do out of the box and not with spending some money on third party software.

Its well beneath your 5,000 dollar limit, and its more sleek and smaller (in thickness) than any other laptop.

eeeeewwww...mac book. jk, its a pretty good laptopt but i think for his purposes and price range the xps would do him a whole lot better...the mc book also isnt as customizable as the xps

The only major difference is the video card and the display. I have no idea what display dell uses, but I know apple uses their own display technology on their laptops. Apple Cinema displays don't use crappy parts.

The dell has no way to edit video, author dvds, has no FW800, has no built in camera, and really has no bundled software at all.

but r you saying that the graphics card isnt important? it obviously is a huge part of a computer...if not for the GPU, then there would be absolutely no point in buying the xps...but since he wants a good GPU then the xps basically has the best

head 2 head in bench marks does the 7900GT really beat the ATI x1600 so badly it would make a HUGE difference gaming? I am also willing to bet that the MacBook Pro runs windows faster and better than that Dell.

Video cards are some of the core componets for gaming but you can't forget about motherboard, system bus, memory, etc. They all factor in. The fact that the MacBook pro is cheaper and in 2 years you could sell it for maybe 400 dollars less than you paid for it you could just upgrade and get another, cheaply. With the Dell you would be at a bigger loss.

Plus Dell support sucks, and dells website sucks. We only have a few dell laptops at mywork and I am glad because from a support standard they are not that good. Hell I get better support from Gateway than I do from Dell.

well the dell has a 7950 gtx...and for some people, not including myself, the video card does make that HUGE of a difference when they purchase the laptop. it's can only be the buyer's opinion and need that can say which laptop beter suits him.

I would get the XPS M1710. Just configure it to 2GB of ram and a 7950 gtx. Also you can get the 80gb hard drive which will save you money and buy a bigger one later on. You can get an external hard drive or you can get the 160GB hard drive when you get this laptop.

Hope this helps

the configurations dont show up when we open the link....it just goes back to the included in price config...just say what you would put in it..

you never know which gpu can go with which laptop so i wouldnt recommend buying them seperately...just customize it at dell.com or some other store to fit your needs

I've been to Dell.com and customized both laptops but it doesnt give the option of selecting a different video card. Do you know where i could find out if the M2010 supports the Nvidia card that comes with the M1710?

i dont think it can come with the same GPU as the m1710...thats why i said that the M1710 is the better buy for you...

I didnt quite read the rest of the replies but honestly I wouldnt go with a dell at all. I mean if your not looking at the price range. The alienware computer would be so much better. Their simply meant for gaming, even the ones with Intel graphics accelerated would be decent. But looking at it, I would get a configuration of 256mb dedicated video ram, most likely geoforce go. 1gb ram of course and 2.0ghz processor. Alienware, this computer would run you about 1,000 and up but on dell this would run you at 1000 flat. Approximately. Oh by the way please dont correct me, all this is just approx.

I just realized that once DirectX 10 is released, the video card in the laptop i get now won't support it. How will i know if the M20 or 1710 will be able to upgrade to a video card that does support DirectX 10?

i have yet to see a card that supports dx10 in a laptop, so if you want to have dx10 support an a laptop then you are gonna have to wait...till one like that comes out
