Laptop as extension of desktop

Ive asked this before and not really got a good answer and I think it may have been because I was asking wrong...

I would like to set up a way to use my laptop as an extension of my desktop. I dont want it to work outside of my home network, so not really a cloud computing situation, just have a seperate partition of my laptop that when it boots up it becomes the desktop. Right now as soon as my laptop boots up I have remote desktop start but I would like it to be a little more in sync than that. I dont know if such a thing exists and im hitting snags online because I dont really know what exactly you call this setup to begin with.

Hoping i can get some feedback on this but from what i have been able to unearth it sounds like it is not going to be possible to boot from the desktops hard drive which is a big bummer.

I think remote desktop is as close as you're going to get unless you want to try and rig up a battery powered wireless monitor with a wireless mouse and keyboard.

I mean, it sounds like remote desktop is exactly what you want, but you don't like the decrease in performance. I don't think there is any way around that.
