Laptop boots only rarely

Sorry if I post this in the wrong place but I've no clue what's causing my problem.

An old backup laptop shows all signs of an empty CMOS battery. It boots rarely, please see: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/116120595/MOV04802.MPG.

However, I've had similar symptoms with 3 different BIOS batteries. Of course there's the possibility of all 3 being empty (even though the current one is supposed to be "new"). But what I'm increasinlgy wondering is:

Could anything else than the BIOS battery be the cause of these symptoms?

Thank you in advance!

Try resetting the BIOS with the CMOS Jumper if there is one...

Ok ive found out, there are two ways 2 do it 1u just need to take out the battery, and Press the on/off button for 5seconds, the 2nd is more drastic u need to dissasemble all parts and take off the small battery(its even in PCs) and hold iit for ten minutes, then its going to be ok (ive did the second way, because the first way works only on some notebooks)

Can you enter the bios?

I can sometimes enter the BIOS.

Most of the time it does nothing whatsoever except show a few power lights for some 4 seconds and then die completely... But now and then it boots perfectly normally. Could I perhaps in any way test whether the BIOS battery is still fit enough to go? Or would I need an external voltage meter for that?

Sometimes? What do you get if you can get past the BIOS? Enter the bios and try to see whether HDDs are detected? It could be that, or the BIOS could be corrupted...if so, you'd have to flash it...but I don't know how to do that :/

In the rare cases it starts booting, there seems to be no problem at all -> just runs Windows without any complications...

I haven't seen any BIOS jumper but it's no effort whatsoever to take out the BIOS battery. But I put in a "new" (perhaps not so new?) one 2 days ago...

Could it possibly be something completely different than the CMOS battery? I'd say if it was the Mother Board, it should NEVER boot fine instead of rarely...

Looking at the video, I think that it is shorting out somewhere for it to turn off like that, or the BIOS is corrupt... you'll have to wait for someone that is better with this sort of thing to come on...as I don't know much about this :/ sorry man.

Thats ok! It could be a number of things. If you can get into the BIOS, look for the event viewer to see whether it reports anything. Like if the machine turns off due to overheating (I know this isn't the case) it would say "01/20/2013 09:42 Processor Thermal Trip (2)" or whatever.

Yeah, this has nothing to do with the cmos battery. This is more hardware related.

1. hdd
2. memory
3. electrical/charging system

You can try turning it on without the hdd attached and see if it reacts normally. You would have to try different ram. But I'm leaning toward this being more electrical. Try removing the battery and just plug the ac power in and see what happens.
