Laptop Broken, want to fix it myself

I have a HP Pavilion DV6000 Laptop, it recently stopped working so i showed it to a friend of mine who said the graphics was broken, he said he could fix it but he is asking too much and i cannot afford it atm. Because of this i think i could fix it myself for less.

My question is:
Because the Graphics card is fused to the Motherboard, do i need to get a whole new motherboard or can i just get a new graphics card?

also, is it hard to change the motherboard in a Laptop? I have basic PC knowledge but have never changed anything in a Laptop.

For all practical purposes, you'd have to replace the whole motherboard.

It shouldn't be too hard - just have to be very careful not to damage anything else while you're poking around in there. Laptop internals are very intricate and some parts delicate, so it will require a certain degree of finesse when you're uninstalling/installing the new mobo.

But before you go ordering a new board, how do you know that the graphics are out, and not just the monitor? Have you used the VGA or S-Video out to see if you can get anything to pull up on another monitor/TV/whatever?

How much did your friend say he'd charge you? How much are you willing to spend? When I'm faced with a problem like this, I'm inclined to just backup what I need from the HDD and sell the thing for parts and buy a new one. Might be cheaper/more practical.

My friend tried that and he poked around the insides of the laptop, its definitely the graphics card that’s Broken.

He said he would charge me £110 ($167) that’s for parts and Labour ive found i can buy an AMD Motherboard for £45 ($68).
I would rather try and fix it myself, it’s cheaper and i may even learn something new in the process.

Well, if you can get it that cheap, then have at it! I Googled for a replacement mobo for your laptop, and I didn't find anything cheaper than $100. Where did you find such a cheap replacement? Are you sure it's a legit buy?

Well, let us know how it goes.

I found the Motherboard on Ebay.

thats actually a fairly cheap repair, hes got good prices if he knows what hes doing. at my work, i charge 120 just for service, and usually mark up the boards around 50 bucks (we warranty our repairs, so it adds up if something needs to get fixed again)

btw, its the whole board thats bad (even though you know that), that was a defective line from hp

anyways, i wouldnt try that on your own. the hp's arent too hard for replacements, but you have to be careful with everything. some pieces pry off and you could risk breaking the clips, and most people end up destroying the clips where the touchpad and keyboard go onto. if you crank on the heatsink for the processor too much, you can crack the motherboard. they are pretty delicate...

however, its a great learning experience. you should work a deal with him where you purchase the board, and he overlooks you replacing it. tell him you'll pay him 30 to show you how to do it, if hes not an ass he should agree to that

Yeah you are going to have to buy another motherboard, or if you can find a Technician that can repair motherboards. I think the price range for your new motherboard is about 160-250.
Of course you can do it yourself it is not that hard. The only thing you have to remember is what screw goes where.

I have fix many laptops and it is easy.

P.S.S don't forget to put thermal paste between the motherboard and the processor.

I will say buy that supportable card, go to hp or any company technical website and monitor the structure of your motherboard. Normally the graphic card is at back left middle side found. Open by 8 mouth screw driver. Fix your card and work again. Just try !!!

Hi Friend,
If you know what is wrong, and are familiar with Laptop repair, you might wish to try some “Do it yourself” repair. And if you can’t do it yourself, you may want to check your warranty to see if you still have time to send it in for repair.

Thanks,
James
