laptop build quality?

What's the build quality like for consumer laptops these days?
Reason I'm asking is that me and my wife went looking at laptops yesterday. Requirements regarding RAM, processor, harddrives and graphic cards are relatively modest (we're not into gaming) but she wants a numerical keyboard and separate buttons to turn the sound on/off. And the build quality needs to be better than that of our current Asus Z91525LBH which is breaking down (buttons breaking off, left-side hinge f****d up). The HP DV6 looked really good until I picked it up. Felt pretty flimsy, especially around the screen. Made our old asus feel solid as a tank. Same goes for almost all other laptops we looked at, which sort of upsets me considering the price of these things.

most laptops use plastic, some use aluminum.

by numerical keyboard do you mean a full keyboard with number pad? if so, you can find those on the bigger laptops, about 15.6 in. or so.

most laptops will also have multimedia keys somewhere on them.

if you have a tendency to mistreat your computer, look into the panasonic toughbook. they started out for military uses but now have a full line of products.

Asus is about as good as it gets in the retail store world. The more expensive laptops aren't just more because of internals, the build quality is usually stepped up too. Ex. most gateways are horrid but their FX gaming notebook is a very solidly built laptop, or a base model chevy colbalt isnt built well, but their corvette can be raced and abused and still be reliable.

Man, wish I could compare some more laptops in real life. Like the HP Probook 4515 which looks like it would be sturdier than the DV6 (at the cost of dedicated buttons for sound on/off and so on along with less RAM, smaller harddrive and slower processor. performance should still be quite enough though).
