laptop charge problem

I have an IBM Thinkpad T23. I was using it and heard a pop and the computer shut off. I touched the ac adapter and it was burning hot. I turned the computer back on and it worked, but would not charge. I tried replacing the power cord because I had an extra one and it still didn't work. I spent the last hour of charge trying to back everything up, but wasn't able to. I think this is a problem with the ac connector on the laptop itself, but may be wrong. Does anyone know what I could do to fix this or how much it would cost to get it fixed?

So what you are saying is that the ac power ceases to function? If you heard a pop, that could have been the power jack coming loose and sparking on something. Try to jiggle the socket where the adapter goes and see if it moves, if its loose your more than likely going to need to get a new dc power jack or resolder the current one to the mobo, which can be done with halfway decent soldering skills and knowing how to disassemble your laptop. Considering that the computer shut itself off, it sounds like the jack did in fact come loose and arc, causing the notebook to power off.
