laptop cooling pad

I was thinking about buying a cooling pad for my laptop. Are they worth the money or don't they really work? And if I should get one what kind. They say the ones that have fans in the pad hook up to your usb on your laptop aren't no good cause it kills the life of the laptop cause it uses the usb power. Some are plastic, some are alluminum. Circuit city sells pads without fans. if somebody could point me in the right direction, I would greately appreciate it. Thanks.
 
The first question is to determine if your laptop even need's better cooling. Stock laptops are made to go like that. Only use the pads if it start's overheating somehow.
 
I just figured the cooler I can keep my laptop the longer it will last in the long in the long run. I don't think it's over heating but I just wanted to prevent it from ever doin it.
