Laptop Cooling

I have a Dell Studio XPS 1640 laptop. The processor is a Intel Core Duo T9550 @2.66 GHZ, stock clocking.

Whats the best way to keep this thing cool? While installing windows update the core temps were 54C. While installing Norton the temps were around 50C. Thats too hot just to be installing some. Idle temps are low, only 30C.
It also gets really hot when watching movies, but the GPU contributes alot to that. GPU idles at 45C.

Those temps are all with a laptop pad with extra fan plugged in under it.

How long have you had the lappy? It might help to open it up and vacuum it out or hit it with some canned air.

Are you sure the fans are working properly?

It sounds like that's a normal temperature for that make/model. I found a post about the same problem with the same lappy - might take a look. Lots of interesting methods for cooling it down or at least dealing with the high temperature, including undervolting - something I'd never heard of, but apparently worked for a poster in this thread:

Hope that helps!

High's at 54C is the high when using it normally. When watching a video it gets to like 62C. Prime test would probably put me into the 70's..
