I bought this laptop a while ago from a friend now something happened where i closed it while it was starting up and it's not working properly now. It will try to start up windows and crash and restart before going into the windows screen just gives me the startup screen. can anyone tell me how i can get into a prompt or screen so I can just format everything? or reinstall windows?
I have no idea and I think I'll have to toss it if not..

It sounds like you had an improper shutdown. When first powering up see if you can into either the bios setup to change the boot order to cd and boot from the recovery disk if you have it. The recover console option is what you will want for these two commands, "FIXMBR" and "FIXBOOT" if XP is the OS.

If you are able to select the boot menu by pressing a key try starting in safe mode with command prompt only to try the same commands. If sounds like a problem with the master boot record from a bad shutdown. That's the software method if no hardware like the drive or board has developed a fault(less likely).

whats the make and model of the notebook in question and what happens when i crashes; does it blue screen or does it shut down?
If it crashes at the same point each time its probably a hardware/driver issue.
If you can run it for a bit and then it just shuts down it could be a heat issue.
