Laptop Dark Screen (please help).

I have a Song VAIO laptop (model: PCG-81112M) which, today, let me down. For some reason the screen is now dark, with the only visible element being the mouse pointer. I DID notice, however (a couple of days ago), how the screen seemed to be a bit darker than usual, and I would try to change its 'brightness' setting - but all to no avail. Now (and for the most part), all I get is screen darkness. What I mean by that is the following:

In the upper right area of my laptop's base, there are three buttons (Assist, S1 and VAIO) which WILL reveal illuminated contents, when depressed. But that will only be visible for as long as I have either one of those particular windows activated. Once they are closed the screen reverts to that state of darkness.

I don't have the restoration disks, as this laptop was given to me - without them.

Is there ANYTHING that I might be able to do?

Is there an external vga connection to hook up an external monitor to see if it works correctly?

I had been aiming at trying that, because I DO happen to have an external monitor, here. But that monitor has a slightly larger connector on the end of it.

However, the laptop screen saw fit to jump to life, upon my very recent attempt to try it again. The laptop is exhibiting some uncharacteristic (very slow) behavior, now, and I wonder if a contracted virus might be the culprit for ALL it's ills.

Well, time to let AVG send the infantry out :).

Thanks for asking/responding.
