Laptop does not want to start after overheating

Last night as I was watching a movie on my laptop (Toshiba M70 [m50 in US]). All of a sudden it froze, then the screen turned black. After unplugging everything, i could smell that something was burning. Now I am not sure if it is the material that was under the laptop, or if it is the laptop itself.
However, the laptop can boot now. The BIOS works fine. I can access that. But that is it. The computer does not boot from the HDD. I can hear the HDD working, but it does not boot from it. The HDD is less then 1 month old. The laptop is older, but i bought a new HDD last month.
Today I tried to start up the computer again, and it is the same deal. I have not tested any of the hardware yet.

So I am wondering if anybody has seen this problem before?

should I purchase a new CPU? or new HDD?

New HDD, it is probably fried or something like that. My friend said he leaves his laptop alone for a few days then turns it on if it starts overheating and then it works just fine.
