I have a friend of mine that dropped his laptop. When he turns it on he gets the black screen with a blinking underscore without Drive letter before it. What do you think the problem is and where should i start I know opening her is inevitable. Thx for the help :D

Any luck if you reinstall the OS? Try using a monitor (in case the LCD is fried)? :) How hard was the drop?

Don;t know how bad the drop was. I was wodering if the drop could have knocked somthing out of place. Why would a drop put the OS out of action. Do you think the hardrive data could be saved if I do have to reinstall.

Nope no physical dents looks pretty solid. Propally on the hard floor. There is not movement in the case. What is the cmos? is there any button i can press to get me into the computer?

1. CMOS is your BIOS/firmware etc
2. Hence my question: did you try an alternate device to rule out the possibility of a fried video subsystem

open it up, maybe something did get knocked loose, however, my friend had an old toshiba laptop, and a linux install got currupt, so when you booted you got nothing but a flashing underscore, then it would just type an L on the screen every min, and he just reinstalled the OS and got it working again

Ok just plugged it in the monitor just the blinking underscore. I turned up sound pressed some keys and i got some beeping noise.

Ok K guys i found a site to open up my friends satilite toshiba. What am i looking for? What component is most likely to get unlogged in a laptop? The laptop does turn on though it just loads the Toshiba screeen then goes straight to the blinking underscore.

Before opening the notebook i went ahead and inserted a win 98 se cd but nothing happened got the same blinking _ with no drive letter. So i guess my opening it up is my only option

Took out the memory and reinstered it nothing. How do i remove the batter it has an arrow that shows its locked cant open it? Im i that notbook illiterate!
