Laptop DVD drive problem

Hi,

My laptop (an HP Pavilion dv6700 running Vista) won't play DVD videos. I can't say if this is a new or an old problem, as I don't recall having tried to play one before. I routinely play other kinds of DVD on my laptop, which say 'DVD ROM' rather than 'DVD VIDEO' on them, and contain video and other files.

When I insert the DVD the computer makes a 'doing something' noise for a while, but the DVD doesn't show up in 'Computer', or in any media-playing program I've tried.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Will

You said the dvd doesn't show up in "computer", is the dvd drive itself listed in "computer"? If not, then there is a registry error that is causing this and we need to fix it.

Yes, the drive is listed, but its name doesn't change to reflect the fact that I've inserted a DVD (the name does change as you would expect for the previously-mentioned kind of DVD which works).

It's possible you have a failing drive or possibly just needs cleaning out with a can of compressed air. So a dvd movie won't play but a dvd game or one with data will? Do you have any dvd playing software on your system? Like power dvd or any thing similar?
