laptop emergency - broken

We just got 4gb's of gskill ram. 2x2gb sticks, the right kind. After trying to put them in and restarting the laptop, the screen went blank, and stays black. Also, the lights on the keyboard (special led's) and touchpad ect. turn on, to the default pattern I have set. The moniter just won't turn on. I assume the laptop needs the ram to work and turn on, so the laptop works at least a little with the ram. Please help.

edit: I had trouble with the metal pins holding the ram in place.
edit: Also, when the computer starts and is flashing the led's, if I press the power button, it instantly shuts off. If I just press it, not hold it..

First, make sure the RAM is seated properly in the slot. Second, try setting the sticks into different slots, then try them one at a time in both slots. If that fails, put the original RAM back in - if it boots, then you know something is wrong with the RAM.
 
I tried just using 1 2gb stick, but the screen stays black. I don't know the proper position for the ram. It feels fine, but I'm looking on alienware website.
 
Yes! I put two ram sticks in, and only one works, but hey, I have twice the ram as before. It says 2.00 gb's. I was pulling the metal things apart, when I should have been pushing the ram above it. I was so stupid! I also found a missing screw :) Thank you so much :)

My girlfriend's Omnibook 5000 has a busted memory slot so only one is good - I threw the larger of the two sticks in that slot. Something is either wrong with the mobo or the slot.
 
On my laptop, the 2x 512mb stock quimoda or whatever ram sticks both worked. So I guess one 2gb stick is busted :( *sigh* well, I'd rather have 2gb's ram for a year than 1gb for a week waiting for repairs.

When you swap out your RAM make sure you're wearing an anti-static bracelet otherwise if there is a static discharge from you to your RAM you can damage it. Also make sure the laptop is insulated from the surface it is on with a thick book or a rubber mat or something.
 
Yea, I tried not to walk around much. I always grounded myself by "touching the computer" on the outside, as the warranty guide says.
 
don't mean to bring this post back from the dead but if you wear gloves, then you don't have to worry about grounding yourself?
