Laptop fails to start

Hi All. My grand daughter's Dell laptop is failing to start and is asking for installation disk, which we don't have, to do a repair. However, the following should be noted - the laptop was repaired (faulty HDD, DVD player, power supply connector etc) and a new version of Vista installed by local repairman. I therefore think that the Dell Recovery partition, if there was one, doesn't exist, hence we need the disk. The repairman will not loan me the disk, wants to charge quite a lot to come and 'repair' or reinstall Vista.

The windows boot manager screen lists the following:
File: \windows\system32\config\system
Status: 0x000014c
Info: Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing or corrupt.
My options appear to be: buy new Vista disk (if still available), beg/borrow/steal(?) disk OR ........... any suggestions welcome

Have downloaded vista recovery iso file from the net and have resolved issue

you can check the disk with another computer. You need take it off and check with cmd with the command (chkdsk). Maybe can be the disk cable. That happened to me. I checked all of my computer and the result was the cable
