Laptop for recording music

I'm in a band and we are just starting to record. I have saved up money to get a laptop to record, so I dont have to drag my desktop around my house and to the others' houses. It would be really nice if the laptop had a 6+ hour battery life, an intel processor (core i5 or i7), and a 15 or 17 inch screen. Any suggestions? And, would it be better to have a dual core or a quad core processor for multi-track recording? Thanks
 
Getting 6 hours while recording would be very impressive but probably not going to happen, good thing is where there are amps to be plugged in there power outlet's for a computer. Do you know what software there is available to you?

Processor does some what matter but the big thing when recording is memory. Would recommend no less then 4 GB of memory, but 6 GB would be nice.

I use Ubuntu for my OS and I use a Digital workstation called Ardour but it only runs on Linux systems and OSX.

If you want to run Windows yes there is pro tools but if you want something free LMMS which runs on Linux but there is a version available for Winodws.

I do recommend this one, easy to use OS, handles the two programs listed above amazingly being that it is a "Unix Like" OS and the company has great reviews for quality. I would though recommend that if you get this model configure it with the 2.5 GHz i5, 6 GB of memory and the 500 GB Hard Drive which bring you to a total of $873

If you decide no on both these models just stick with a i5, 4-6 GB of RAM (preferably 6 GB), and as far as good brands that are quality built from Windows ASUS, Lenovo Thinkpad, Sony Vaio, Samsung. Any of these can run Ubuntu.

good luck shopping and do tell us what you find, if I may ask what do you play and what kind of music if you do not mind me asking.
 
Oh ok thanks. I will stay away from HP. What about Macbook Pros? It seems like everyone either loves them or hates them. Are they really worth the price? Being a musician, every dollar I save goes a very long way. And would a 2.00 gHz quad core i7 be better than a 2.5 gHz dual core i5? Thanks

I really have to partly disagree here. For the most part yeah that's true, until you get to there upper models. Namely the dv6 and dv7 series. These are very good quality machines.

And a lot of people tend to use macs for anything phot, video or music oriented. It even comes with garage band which is a light program that lets you edit and record music. Of course, if you are serious about your music you will want to purchase an actual program. regardless either the i5 or the i7 will be fine.

I disagree on the grounds of owning a DV7.
parts replaced so far: Toshiba Hard drive, Ram failed (replaced with kingston), GPU 3x's, and DVD drive. Hardly a high quality machine.
