Budget? You HAVE to have more than $350, but thats a awful budget, $500 is a good budget for a laptop that just does basic purposes, and some sorta intensive ones. Do you want to play games at all? $750 mininum for a reasonable one.

We need to know your budget.

But as far as brands go, I'd go for Dell. So many people that I know have Dell's. They are really durable and have good battery life.

Although, I own an Acer myself. A lot of people don't like Acer but I've had my Acer Laptop for 4 years now and I have had zero problems with it.

If I had to buy one for my child I would pick the Alienware m11x. It has a second generation core i7 processor and 7 hour battery life. You can custom configure it and the web form will let you know if a component you pick isn't compatible so you can make sure you get what you need. Also Alienware is owned by dell and the purchase goes through them.
I am on my second Alienware laptop and have not had any issues and they are my absolute favorite. If you are on a budget the Dell 15R would be my second choice.

I would check the college website for laptop requirements. Once we know the requirements mandatory for the course it may be easier for us to help you choose a laptop. For example my requirements for my laptop this year are i7, 16gb of ram, at least 750gb of HDD space, the list goes on.
