laptop for teen

Hi, I'm currently moving to a new house soon, and I will need a laptop for myself. I download lots of music, movies, and may download some games I get from my friends such as Tony Hawk and Counter Strike (nothing too serious of gaming). I don't need anything with a big screen, I can settle with a 14 or 15 inch screen. My problem is, the budget is around 500-650 dollars. If anyone can help, it would greatly be appreciated. I have been looking at the Sony VAIO NR laptop, some Dell laptops (the cheaper ones seem to be slow from what I read), and considering HP laptops. eBay is probably the way I am gonna buy, so I can hopefully get it cheaper. Thanks!

Current Options (will be editting once in a while)

-Dell Vostro 1500 (pretty cheap, looks decently good)

-Gateway MT3423

i suggest anything with XP on it...youll have problems with games/apps on vista...also , if your willing to wait a little bit, im sure you can nail a nice sale, i got my 1.8 GHz Due processor,2GB ram,meh vid card,100GB HD and dvd/cd burner laptop for 650...bad part = was preinstalled with vista on the launch day of vista

also, I am a complete noob when it comes to all those memory and speed stuff. I just read stuff about RAM, and it seems like I would need to go for an extra gb of ram. just to ask.. do I buy a 2g ram, and replace it with the 1g, or do i just add another 1g? And it says it comes with Vista software. Is it already installed, or do I install it myself? I would rather run XP from what I hear...

You can just buy another 1gb RAM module and install it along with the current 1gb module, thus bringing the RAM total to 2gb.

It's going to come with the operating system (Vista) pre-installed, but you can wipe it and put XP on it. Besides that, I know Dell gives you the choice between Vista, XP, and Ubuntu, preinstalled.

thanks for the answer

so basically, I am looking at these 2, and they are reasonably priced, but they seem the same (except for the fact that the 160gb hard drive costs less than the 120gb hard drive...) it's hp and compaq

HP Pavilion DV6605
-160gb hard drive, 1g ram
-$569

Compaq Presario F730
- 120gb hard drive, 1g ram
-$599

any noticeable difference between the two other than hard drive capacity?

ok, basically, the HP Pavilion is the one I am focusing on. All I need to know is if this game would work on it, and it should basically determine if I should get this laptop or not.

From the Tony Hawk Aemrican Wasteland game, this is what it says on their website

Operating System: Windows XP

CPU : 1.2 GHz (1.5 GHz recommended)

Memory: 256 MB or higher (512 MB recommended)

Hard Disk Space: 3.5 GB free disk space

Sound Card: DirectX 9.0c compliant

Video Card: 64 MB DirectX 9.0c video card

Media Required: 5X CD-ROM drive required to install and play

Supported Video cards: NVIDIA: GeForce 3 Ti series, GeForce 4 Ti series,
GeForce FX series, GeForce 6 series, GeForce 7 series

ATI: X800 series, X1300 series, Radeon 8500 series, Radeon 9000 series, Radeon 9600 series, Radeon 9800 series

To me... that is all mumble jumble... can anyone clarify to me the BASIC needs of this game, accodring to the HP laptop?

If your interested im looking to sell a laptop. Its a Compaq R4000 that has a brand new 80 gig HDD and 2gigs ram put in it. Ive got the original box for it as well as a chill pad and a PCMCIA Creative labs Audigy2 soundcard that supports 5.1 and 7.1 surround and a big software suite to go with it (Photoshop CS2, Flash 8 Pro, Fireworks 8, Dreamweaver8). PM me if you want more specs or might be interested. Im looking for around $600.

Just hope it runs on vista. That should be the only problem.

You shouldn't come across many(if any) compatibility issues in Vista. Vista's been out for almost a year now, and there have been many updates that improved the compatibity and reliability. Most of the people who bash it haven't used it since beta 2 was out.
