Laptop for University

I'll be getting a laptop for my girlfriend for University and I don't really know what to get her. The HP I got a couple years ago is a POS and want to avoid that brand.

She needs it for:

Typing
Music
Internet

That's basically all she'll need it for lol. She's not great with computers but wants something fast. She won't be gaming besides facebook browser games.

I was just thinking of getting her a MacBook Pro 13 in. What do you guys think?

I've been a big fan of the aluminum macbooks since day 1. I've never felt a laptop that felt so sturdy and well built. I guess everyone looks for something different in their laptops, but I think the main quality you should be looking for is build quality.

I'm not a big fan of the Mac OS but its good for someone who doesn't care too much about computers, its incredibly simple.

The only problem is Mac's are incredibly overpriced.

Mac book is expensive...

I'm open to other ideas.

Sony Vaio E series are very comparable, while approximately $400 cheaper. I haven't personally used one, but I've heard a lot of good things about Sony laptops. I'd say its definitely worth taking a look into.

Here are a few specs I ripped off some site:
Approximate Battery Life - Up To 3.5 Hours
Hard Drive Capacity - 500 GB 5400 RPM
Processor Cores - 2
Processor Speed -2.26 GHz
Processor Type - Intel Core i3 - 350M
RAM - 4 GB
Screen Size - 15.5 Inches

Looking for something with a screen around 13 in and the battery life doesn't seem very good.

+1 Vaio's are very nice, quality all round.

Both of these seem around the same price of a MacBook Pro with similar stats?

The latitude depends on the model and the specs you choose. Mine was a little more than $1400 for:

Latitude E6500
Win Vista Business with XP Downgrade
250GB 5400RPM HDD
Core2Duo P8600 2.40 Ghz
4GB DDR2 RAM
15.4" LCD
DVD Burner
9-Cell Battery (lasts almost 6 hours)

There are many different ones. My dad has an E5400 for work that is nice, small, and light.

Either of these would be good:
Asus U45JC-A1
Asus U30JC-B1

Core i3 370M (2.4GHz)
4GB RAM (DDR3)
Dual graphics chips: Nvidia Geforce 310m for performance and Intel GMA HD for battery life
13.1"/14" screen
LED screen

Could use a longer warranty, but the one that comes with it is awesome for the year that you have it, and Asus up there with Sony in terms of reliability. (so is apple)

These look good. I'll see what she thinks about them.
