Laptop freezes, crashes, sometimes won't boot.

Hi, I just replaced the HDD in my Acer Aspire 5050 laptop. Last week, it took about 30 mins to boot and took about 10 mins to open a folder, kept crashing and was just useless. It took me all day, but I managed to get the most important suff off it and now I have a new drive in it.

Clearly the old drive had a problem, because I am using the laptop to make this post, that wouldn't have been possible with the old drive, but it still has major problems. It has taken over 10 minutes to get this far into this post. It has frozen several times. I actually tried to post this morning, but it crashed completely.

When boot fails, it beeps twice. I don't know what that means. Core Temp says the cpu is averageing between 43-53 degrees C. Freezing & crashing usually happens when I type stuff.

I haven't tried anything other than using the internet yet, I haven't re-installed any of my other programs yet. I changed the RAM and the hard drive is new, so it must now be either the motherboard or the cpu, or maybe both?

When it freezes, I can keep typing away and it will catch up when it comes back to life again, as log as it doesn't totally crash.

No, it boots much faster, but sometimes it still fails to boot. CPU is making a lot of noise too now, so I'm guessing it must be that?

What did you use to reload the operating system on to this computer? This may be a software issue. You may be missing some device drivers that the notebook needs to run properly.

Maybe you have bad spots on your HD where system files happen to reside.

No seriously, this isn't from me; this is from Steve Gibson. The denser the HD, the more likely your HD will fail.
