laptop freezes when playing games

my new laptop (gateway p-7805u) will freeze about 20-30 minutes into games. when this happens, the computer becomes unresponsive and i have to hold the power button. i installed the latest driver from nvidia and stress tested my geforce 9800m gts using furmark. at 800 seconds the temp was 78 degrees celsius and when i stopped the test at 1500 seconds, it was still 78 degrees. then i played wow in windowed mode to see the temp. when it froze, the temp was only 56 degrees. other games it has frozen on are rollercoaster tycoon 3 and warcraft 3, which only froze once when i accidentally set my laptop on a padded table that covered up the vents.

if my graphics card isn't overheating, what is the problem?

Is your CPU overheating?

the problem happened again only this time i used speedfan to monitor other temps.
HD0: 47 degrees celsius
GPU: 54
Temp1: 53
Temp2: 54
Core0: 48
Core1: 47

are these normal?

note: i am going to my cabin and will not be able to access the internet for several days. please diagnose the problem without me! thanks in advance.

If these are idle, which I have to guess they are, seeing as how A) you got the temps, meaning it didn't hardlock on you, meaning it wasn't hot B) these are way too good to be load temps, but as far as idling temps go, your CPU is pretty high. Most people here won't let their OC'd CPU's run at over 60-65 for any prolonged period of time, and if you're running just shy of 50 at idle, it could be a cause of the issue. Get load temps WHILE playing the game except before it usually locks. So if it takes say, 20 minutes to lock, get the temps at 15 minutes in. Blowing all the dust off of vents and the interior components is a good idea as well, whether its the problem or not.

Laptops have always had a heatsink issue, therefore never lasting long. You probably have a heat problem or your laptop just cant stand playing a video game...

i forgot to say that the temps i recorded were at the time when the game froze. i was playing world of warcraft in windowed mode so i could view the temperatures after it froze. i don't think the problem is overheating because those aren't overheating temps.
