laptop freezes

my laptop freezes once in a while. it freezes like every other day, sometimes when i am trying to close a program thats not responding such as movie maker 2 and iinternet explorer. what could be wrong? compaq evo n610c 512mb, xp, p4 1.80ghz, dvd, 30gb, ati radeon mobile 7500 32mb.
i dont have virus protection cause i cannot afford to buy. could this be the problem?is there anywhere on the net where i can get it for free?
 
First off, get AVG "FREE" Edition. Spybot S&D as well as Adaware could help out. Do some scans. If problems continue, download Speedfan and check your temps. Laptops are pretty bad about over heating.
 
if it freezes every other day, then you may not be infected yet, but yes, do waht Other_ONe said, dont know why you dont have protection.
 
i just got speed fan and it says that the HDD'S TEMP IS 53CELCIUS AND IT HAS A FLAME NEXT TO IT. AND SO DOES TEMP 1/ 61 CELCIUS. EVERYTHING ELSE IS FINE. what should i do?
 
I'd Try googling to find out the ideal temp.

I personally try to keep my desktop cpu below 50 Degrees Celsius.

AVG is a really good antivirus software, I had it for a few years, then switched to sbc antivirus, which i would also recommend.

AVG has worked very well for me, so it'll do fine. Besides, anything is better than nothing.

Those temps are rather hot. I beleive my HD on my laptop gets to around 53*C when I run it for a while... I assume you don't have the option to manually control the fan(s)? If so, crank them up, or setup a profile for them to come on sooner. If not, you might have to resort to something else, like a laptop cooling pad. I've got one I purchased for my old laptop(that I no longer have) PM me if you might be interested in it...

Oh yeah, my processor tends to be around 50*c after I've run it for a while, and that's underclocked from 1.6GHz to 800MHz...
 
I Dont Have A Temp 4. It Only Goes Till 3. I Havea Cooling Pad. Its Just I Dont Like Haveing The Cooling Pad On My Lap When I Am Typing Something. Does The Cooling Paq Take Alot Of Energy From My Laptop? Because I Am Thinking Of Taking It With Me When I Am Travel On Airplanes.
How Can I Clean My Laptop Fan?
