Laptop freezing after loading desktop

My sisters laptop has started freezing once on desktop, it doesn't appear to load any programs, just freezes without showing start bar, just the desktop items, a few times it's not even got to the Windows boot screen before freezing. We've tried leaving it on for hours and it still stays frozen.

One thing that I think may be something to do with it is that it now needs to be plugged in constantly, otherwise the battery dies extremely fast when its not plugged in. Is the battery dieing and on it's last leg? Any thoughts or ideas on what to do? Thanks,

:)

Well, the battery probably is on its last leg, but I doubt that is what is causing the laptop to freeze, considering the battery would cause the entire computer to just shutdown rather than freeze. Have you tried booting up in safe mode or even been able to?

We've tried booting into safe mode, but it freezes soon after. We do get a start bar! But nothing more :S
