laptop hangs forever right before xp welcome screen

it won't work in safe mode

um i do not have the xp installation disk on me, as I am on vacation

one time, it said that it recovered a registry error or something, but its been doing the same thing ever since

and when i manually turn it off, the fans die pretty hard, is there a way to clean them?

also it is the laptop in my sig
