Laptop Hard Drive issue

Hello,
I am new to the forum and would like to pick the brains of all you knowledgable folk out there. I've tried googling my problem but can't find anything.

We had to update i-Tunes on our family laptop but it wouldn't complete the install because it said the hard drive was out of space.

When i click on My Computer there are 2 drives showing.

C (System) Drive - shows almost full - over 31GB used out of 32GB.

D (Data) Drive - empty - nothing on it at all apart from a tiny file and has 32GB free.

How can i get my laptop to recognise that there is 32gb free on the D drive and carry on storing things instead of telling me i have no space left?

We can't even upload any more pictures from the camera etc. They seem to default to the C drive somehow and totally ignore the D.

Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks

The simplest thing you could do would be to change the install location when installing software to point it to the D: drive. For instance, when installing and it says something like "Install to C:\somewhere", change it to be "D:\somewhere" which will do the install on the D: drive.

Another solution assumes that your C: and D: drives aren't physical drives but are actually one drive split into two. If that's the case, it would be possible to shrink or even eliminate the D: drive and add that space to the C: drive by repartitioning your drive.

What OS are you using and what are your machine specs?

It's one physical drive split into two. Windows Vista Home Premium on a basic Acer laptop.
It's not the install location, i don't get the option to change to D drive, C just takes over.

Vista has the ability to delete the D: partition and extend the C: partition built-in. Here's a tutorial Vista Disk Management. Be sure you save any data you have on the D: partition before you delete it or you will lose it.
