What brand machine, and what is the model number? If you can't get XP install to format it, then there is definately an issue somewhere. Are you doing a full format, or a quick format?

Well, the drive has to be behind one of the doors on the thing somewhere. I was going to find some specs for it online, but can't find anything. Sorry.

Third party software? There should be some programs out there that format the drive. But you said XP wouldn't install. What if there's something wrong with the CD, or the CD drive itself may have some errors. Problem shouldn't be too serious!

Not thinking this is going to be it for him. If it starts the format, but fails at a certain point, there is probably something wrong with the disk.

Do you hear any clunks or strange sounds from the bottom of the machine?
