Laptop Hardware Problem

I'm having an issue with my HP Pavilion g7 laptop. The best way I can describe it is that the top of the base part pops up on one side when I open it. I have some pictures.

A closer look. The dust isn't what I'm worried about right now.

A close up side view. I think this will provide the most information.

If anyone can help, I'd like to know the cause of this issue, how to fix it, and how to prevent it in the future. Thank you for your time.

Most likely a broken hinge. Will have to be torn down to verify. How old is the machine?

Either the hinge snapped or the screw base broke. From what I can see in the picture, it looks like the latter. Either way something is going to need to be replaced, which from the picture looks like it would be the entire base of the computer, as that is where the hinges screw down.

HP will charge you an arm and a leg to fix it, so if you can find a local repair place (NOT GeekSquad) then go that route.

I've heard they fix computer at very fair rate, some guy's buddy went to college and worked there.
A thread started by a new member is NOT the place for this sarcasm, because they're likely to not know that and listen to you :P

Yeah, Austin, GS will rip you the F off.

That being said most places will try to charge you more in labor than what you could pick up a cheap unit for, so you'll likely be trying to piece it together yourself if you want to salvage it.
