Laptop HDMI output to 1080p tv?

I noticed that most 15 inch laptops have a 1366 x 768 display. When i plug it into my 1080p tv it only takes up about 2/3 of the full screen with a big black area around. How would I go about making it do the full 1920x1080?

There should be a setting in the video options of the TV to stretch to full screen.

Yes, but even when I do that it still has a bar across the top and bottom. And it won't be 1080 if its still at 13xx x 7xx resolution.

Set the resolution to 1920x1080.

I have no idea what the settings of your TV are but stretching to screen (may be some sort of zoom setting) will work. I downloaded the pdf for a Sony Bravia for another thread and in that you would use Auto or Full 2 or Wide Zoom.

On top of that, the aspect ratio of your laptop is identical to full HD (16:9) so fitting to width or height should also work. If you are showing a movie that is in extra widescreen such as 2.35:1 you will have black bars top and bottom, which is correct.
