I'm trying to learn more about my friend's gateway laptop. It's a old old model solo 5300. It has windows XP on it but it has no control panel, I can't access hardly anything on it because it's been locked by the administator. I would like to totally clean it up, update it the best I can, and get it working. I guess I need to find out a couple of things here.

First of all boot up time takes forever. It needs a RAM upgrade stat!!!! What kind of memory does this thing take?

Second of all how do I reinstall windows XP on it. I have a disc, but don't know what else to do?

Please help.

To reinstall XP, put the disc into the CD drive and boot of the disc,

Try booting up the laptop in safe mode and creating an admin account, press F8 when the system is booting.

Ok guys I've hit a big snag with this POS. I don't have a key for the windows XP CD because it's a copy that was installed from the factory on another computer. It's too old to run ubuntu (128MB of RAM won't boot the disc). Owner doesn't want to spend a ton of money to get this thing working again. Windows XP has 30 days left for activation. I looked at newegg, and here is what I'd pay to get this damn thing updated just so it would run...

512MB of PC100 RAM $100+
Windows XP SP3 $90

I have the key for the windows 98 that came on it, but no disc.

What should I do???

WOW!!!!! 128MB of ram, XP would be slow on that. I would call MS to and see if they give you a license key....

xp works with 64 megs. My parents old 256mb desktop is extremely slow with 1/4 a gig.

Yeah, my old system was the same, it had 256MB with a 768MHZ CPU, then i put another 256MB stick in and then it was better, but i would never use that again, i ended up giving it to a friend, and only recently they upgraded and game me the motherboard, CPU and the RAM, i ended up getting rid of the ram for $4 each,
