Laptop in Canada

I've got a desktop for gaming, but am considering a laptop for mobility. For email, surfing, word processing, maybe light gaming. Don't know anything about them regarding processors, RAM, etc.
Thinking 15.4" screen but that is a best guess; consider LENOVA, HP, APPLE, possibly VAIO.

Anybody provide some insight? AMD vs INTEL? Centrino vs Core DUo

Thanks!

Trying to keep it under$1000, and was thinking of 600 to 800

Okay cool, would consider an acer or asus laptop?

We just got some slick new ones in and you might like to broaden your brand search,

..i'm looking for a few in particular..hang on.

There is a nice Acer 6920 with 16" screen, 4GB ram, 320GB hdd, 2.0ghz intel cpu,///it has 4500 integrated graphics.

Priced around $750 can.

I know nothing about ACER or ASUS. I thought ASUS just made motherboards.
So, I'm investigating and learning at this point, and will consider anthing.

Asus makes many products including, motherboards, cooling products, video cards, sound cards, cases, custom desktops and a wide range of notebooks.

If you plan to do a bit of gaming--I would recommend spending a tad more--You will step into a better cpu, dedicated graphics, faster hdd, blueray, bigger screen.

You will still have 64-bit operating system, 4GB ram, dvd-r, tons of ports, usb...etc

Thanks DM. Looks like a nice laptop, but starts at about 1200 in Canada. Will consider it, but would have to adjust my expectations/price point. Good comparison for other alternatives/candidates.
