HP Pavillon dv2700 running Windows Vista
I turn it on and try running startup repair, but while it was running, the display/video became fuzzy. I couldn't read anything. I restarted the computer and tried to start windows normally. It shows windows loading, but then the screen goes black, I get a BSOD (it went away too quickly, I couldn't write down the error).
Now evertime I try to turn it on, I see the blue power lights/ HDD lights but the screen just stays black (I think only the backlights are on). I scanned the HDD using Windows 7 error-checking and scanned it for viruses but everything was fine. Could a damaged GPU cause this? I tried plugging a VGA monitor into the laptop, but the monitor just displays "video cable connected?". I'm thinking of reflowing the GPU, but what are your suggestions? Thanks.

The HP DV series are notourious for having GPU problems having more than one of the DV9000 and DV6000 series going down on me and customers.

Sounds like it could be the GPU, Do you have any Beeps on bootup?

What do u mean by re-flowing the GPU??

No beeps on start-up.

The GPU chips on laptops are connected using BGA (ball grid array) packaging, in which tiny solder balls connect the chip to the motherboard. Some of these connections could have formed cold solder joints - in which the connections become brittle and the chip cannot make proper connection to the motherboard. Reflowing is a procedure where the chip is heated up and the solder balls are melted, making the connections 100% good again.

Edit: After searching the web, I'm almost certain the problem is with the BGA and reflow would be the only fix, or buying a new mobo/GPU.

Ah rite ok, sounds like that could be the problem there having with them, the HPs ive had problems with have been majorly overheating, including my own, possibly to the point where it could cause the solder to not create the connection,

Id say try the reflowing if you can.....your not gonna lose anything as the laptops dead anyway, Let us know how u get on :)
