Laptop just stopped working? Dead?

Hi guys,

I'm new to this forum and I don't know that much about hard- and software.
Nevertheless I enjoy working on my laptop and always looking for more info.

But now I have a problem:
I was playing an mp3 with win media player and suddenly my laptop stopped working. The song was stuttering and wouldn't continue. Then what happened was, that the screen was fully covered with red, white and black vertical stripes. It wasn't doing anything. Then I turned off my laptop by pushing the on/off button (the hard way, since I couldn't control anything anymore). I waited for a while and then I decided to turn it on again.
Windows startup screen showed up and the blue windows 'load' screen showed up and after that, nothing. Turned it off again and now I don't know waht to do. Is it the motherboard, hard disk or CPU or something else? CAn anyone help me? Unfortunately I don't have any warranty anymore. I'm afraid I have to throw this one away......:(

Hmm, ok. thanks for your reaction. theoretically I could change the hard drive, if I can reach it. But if it's a virus, how can I get rit of it? Install windows again, or something else? Since it's not possible to startup windows.
I protected my acer with antivir antivirus and windows firewall.

ok i say reinstall windows - easiet way to solve it. Once you have done that install AVG 8.0
