Laptop keeps freezing, tried everything I know

Hello, This is my first post here, and I'm sorry that it is one asking for help, I know that's no always the best way to join a forum, but I'm desperate.

I have an HP Pavilion zv5000 laptop and it keeps freezing up at random times. At first it only happened when I would be doing many things at once such as watching a movie, using Bitlord, using Mozilla, and chatting on MSN. So I figured I was just overloading my computer causing it to overheat, etc.

So I took better care to ease up on it, with no results, it continued to freeze on me. Once even when I had just started it up in the morning and all I had running was MSN messenger.

Recently the fan seems to be on full blast all the time, and the laptop seems to be very hot, so I've made an even bigger effort to lighten the load on my laptop, eliminating usless processes from running, and doing full system scans with many antivirus and anti-spyware programs. I also blew out all the dust in the fan areas (there was a lot).

This has succeeded in solving the over-heating problem, and now I'm only using approx. 150M/921M of my memory with 26 processes running when I first start up my computer, compared 200+M/921M and 40+processes. So I'm very pleased with my efforts there.

The freezing problem however hasn't stopped. Most recently it freezes EVERYTIME I play a certain game on my computer, even though I played it for hours at a time a few days ago with no problems.

I have reformatted my hard drive twice before in an effort to stop the problem, to no avail. I have contacted HP support, and the only thing left for me to do regarding their troubleshooting is reformat again, something which I would like to avoid.

Can anyone help me?

btw, I realize I'm a computer newb compared to some, if things I've said are really stupid please tell me what to do differently.

Formatting it and doing a clean install was a good way to narrow it down. When you reformatted the system, did you install the latest drivers off the HP site? Either way, I'd say its a hardware problem. Could be overheating- freezing is a symptom for that. Also, have you installed any RAM yourself? Sometimes, having conflicting or bad sticks can cause freezing.

Thanks for the reply.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure if I got all the latest drivers the last time I formatted the hard drive. I will check it out asap.

I haven't installed any RAM myself. I posted on a different forum about the same problem, and someone suggested testing my memory through http://www.memtest86.com/ so I will try that and see if that's the problem.
