Laptop Keeps Shutting Down

It's been shutting down after about 5 minutes of use, and I can't figure out what's wrong. I ran into the same problem about a year ago, but an external cooler velcroed to the bottom did the trick. This time, however, it's shutting down before it even gets the chance to heat up. It works perfectly fine for those 5 minutes.

The only idea I have is that it just isn't being powered properly. When I put in the battery(long dead), the laptop switches back and forth between Balanced and Full Power every few seconds. When I use it without the battery that doesn't happen. Either way it only last about 5 minutes. I'd say it's the power cord, but it works fine on my friend's laptop.

I'd really appreciate any suggests, and I don't mind jury-rigging if I have to. The laptop is already a computer version of Frankenstein's monster, so it really can't get any worse. I know I should buy another one, but I don't have the money.

I would say you have damaged the internal electronics of the laptop by using a bad battery or something. How old is the laptop? Have you ever removed removed the old thermal paste and applied new?

I would say its lived its lifetime. You definately have battery/electronic issues with the balanced and full power flashing. New thermal paste isn't gonna fix that issue. A new battery is gonna cost between $80-$100 and its just not cost effective as old as it is. Save up and get a new laptop.

Ya, you're probably right. I took the bottom off and mounted a fan directly over the CPU. Still didn't help :/

I guess I'll have to take my friend's screenless laptop and try to attach my screen to it. Should be fun.

Unless it's the same model (or at least family or brand, but that's pushing it), it's unlikely that will work.
