laptop keeps shutting off

Hiya!

I've a Toshiba laptop- a brand new gift from 1-1/2 yrs ago. I never take it out of the house- it's my little treasure.

When it came new, It had Norton Anti-virus, then I got Verizon on-line anti-virus.

However, 2 days ago, it started shutting off even before booting is finished.

I tried it several times, but even before rebooting, it turns off - as if it were dead.

I put on the recovery program discs- and of course, all my data erased (but tat's no problem I hav discs and urls in the mail section).

So, the original program is back on- I saw it on screen before the laptop shut off again. So, the original program is on again, but the laptop shut off 2 secs after.

I then took it to a Computer repair place, and he tried it several times, ea. time it shut down as mentioned. He couldn't find what was wrong. He said probably, the motherboard or the hard drive. Finaly, he "Cleared" something up- he wouldn't say what - and I paid $40.

When I took it home it worked fine for an hour os so, then it sut off again.
I tried turmed it on, but it shut off again.

Now, I must say, I don't believe it's the Mother board- because I saw the original program from Toshiba- after I ran the recovery discs.

Could it be the hard drive. Or even a new type of virus?

I want to add, that I've noticed the laptop heats up extremely hot. It this normal for laptops or is it that a fan is off?

I don't want to buy a new computer. I prefer to repair it.

Thank you.

I'd first suspect the cooling fan. Can you tell if it is running?
If it is there may be dust plugging the airflow.

help for you

hey i had a problem like that try leting your laptop cool or try resting it on your legs

y ok it might be somthing in the fan blocking it... if not my suggestion would be when it boots up put it in BIOS coz you can see the temriture nd stuff see if its over heating...

if the situation is following:
if completely cool down, it holds longer and then shut off, then if you turn on right away, it shut off shortly.
it means your fan has problem or fan flow path is stuck. if you can hear big fan running sound, it means the fan is running in max speed to try to cool down. so the flow path might be dirty. need clean it up.

If you suspect the hard drive, just disconnect it, then turn on the laptop, keep and see whether the unit shuts off or not.

One more thing, F8 enter into the advance startup, choose the option " Enable boot logging" to boot up. if possible, check the file "ntbtlog.txt" under c:\windows\ and see if any hardware driver doesn't work.

He, he. I'm at the libr. seeing all mssgs. It's enough to make me cry.

I went to Best Buy's Geek Squad desk today- gave me a song and dance about Diagnosing- costs etc. It takes 8 hrs & they said they had to keep laptop overnight. I didn't want that. . I asked whether it could be the battery or the hard drive. They really had no idea what it was.

But I made them open it up - (I didn't hv the tiny screwdriver) to check the fan- as was recommended here.

It was chock full of dust and cat hair ( have a cat)- which they said flew everywhere. So it was cleaned up. I paid $40. and came home.

Turned on the laptop and it was good for a few mins. Then shut itself off. Tried to put it back on 2 x more. But no good.

so, here I am.

Toshiba outlet takes 2 days. Cost of Diagnosis $180.

I called the Geek Squad to do on site, the guy thinks its a virus, that keeps turning off the comp. Anyway, they can't come until next Wed. and then they will Diagnose at $130 up.

I'll hv to take it to a local place, I guess.

Thanks anyway, guys.
