The pins are how the memory gets it's power and transfers data. Most SODIMMs are 200pin now, so it's more important to know the type you need (ie DDR, DDR2).
They are keyed so that they aren't supposed to fit in a slot they wont work in but they keying on 200pin DDR and 200pin DDR2 is very similar so it's hard to tell which is which by looking at them. Neither should fit in the other slot though.
hmm, ok thanx, is there a way of telling whether my memory is compatible with my laptop? or shall i just try it when it comes? sorry, i just thought that all you had to get right was the speed (pc2700 etc.) and the DDR or DDR2 or DDR SDRAM
