Laptop Motherboard/keyboard question.

Guys I have a generically made laptop, which I bought 3 yrs + ago from an online company. At the time it was top notch, gaming computer, now it's just run of the mill. I am currently having problems with the keyboard. the asdf keys, with "a" being the worse of the bunch, are not working well. Sometimes the computer warms up after an hour and they start working. Lately though the "a" key is completely disfunctional. If I remove the key pad, and hit the part underneath in very deeply the a does appear, other then that not a chance. I decided maybe to buy a new keyboard. But then read this and got worried:
In some cases a failing keyboard can indicate a faulty keyboard controller on the laptop’s motherboard.

My question is how do I tell if it's the keyboard controller on my laptops mobo that is causing the issue (is there a test/program out there, bios config etc.). This problem just popped up out of nowhere too, like day and night. Like I said use of asdf keys is sporadic. I cleaned under the keyboard to no avail. Should I reinstall the keyboard driver? I'm clueless, any help would be appreciated. here's the keyboard:
