Laptop mouse not working.

One of my buddys had his mouse all of a sudden stop working on his laptop. He told me he restarted it and the same thing happend. I haven't been over to check on it yet but before I go anyone got any good info when dealing with this sort of problem?

No its not an external mouse. I'm going to check for spyware and run my virus software on it, but if that doesn't work I wanted a back up plan
