Laptop Needs Very Long to Get Boot Up Stage!!!

Hi All,

My laptop has a strange problem. When I turn on the power button, screen remains blank for quite long (appx. 30 min), then computer boots up and starts normally. After this, everything is quite normal. The boot up process itself is not longer but the problem is that, laptop needs long time to get boot up stage and until then screen is completely blank as if computer has not been switched on. I am not sure if its hardware problem or software. Does anyone has experience in removing such problem. I would really appreciate any suggestions. Following are the main configuration of my laptop-

TOSHIBA Satellite A80-117 model
Intel® Centrino 1.6 GHz Processor
1 GB DDR RAM
120 GB Samsung Harddisk (replaced)
NVIDIA GeForce Go 6200 Graphic card

The problem is before the POST screen. When I switch on the laptop, nothing happens on the screen for quite long time and after this long time TOSHIBA screen appears first and computer boots up quite normally afterwords.

Very strange... Well if it's before the Toshiba screen, it's almost certainly hardware related. Have you performed any upgrades to the computer? I guess by the specs you've replaced the hard drive, but is that all? Have you tried removing it and seeing if it still has the lag?

I also think its hardware related. I have not done any upgrades except replacement of hard disk before six months. The original built up hard disk crashed and I changed with new one. Laptop was working quite normal even after changing the hard disk. This strange problem appeared since last two weeks only. I have not tried yet removing the hard disk. I think I better try this way.

I would try upgrading the bios in this case if removing the hard drive doesn't bring back the speed of it posting.

While I agree to try and upgrade the bios, I'd try some more simple things first, like RAM swaping and all. Seeing as updating the bios is rather destructive and essentially ruined one of my Acer netbooks :P

As a first try, I updated the BIOS from Toshiba web site but did not work out. The problem remains still same. I also checked hard disk with TOSHIBA's hardware diagnostic tool but it shows hard disk is all right. I have not gone yet through "swapping RAM". I want to check my RAM first by windows memory diagnostic tool.

May be? but how to enable quick boot?? could you please tell me? But as I wrote booting itself is not problem. The problem is that computer needs long time to reach boot up stage/screen. When it reaches the booting stage, boot up goes normally.

In the BIOS there is usually an option for "Quick Boot" and "Quiet Boot". Go in and look around and see if there is an option for "Quick Boot"

When Quick boot is disabled, all of the memory is tested thoroughly. If Quick boot is enabled, it does a quick test of the RAM.

I checked BIOS, Quick boot is already enabled. So this is not the reason. I also think that its either RAM or Hard disk which have got something wrong. Seems that I have to face this problem bit longer coz I have to buy new RAM and hard disk to change and see. But not sure if that will fix the problem.
