laptop nortons is about to expire... what should i use now?

I prefer AVG Free Edition, but I've heard good things about Microsoft Security Essentials as well. Avira AntiVir and Avast! are two more options.

I do not recommend Norton for home users - it is a resource hog, and it's been my personal experience that it doesn't work as well as its free counterparts. :D

would it be a problem of hogging resources even if its an i7 laptop?

and this is a computer i NEED to be secure, so out of thoes ones which one can i trust?

Like I said, I prefer AVG Free.

Personally, I don't use any anti-virus software. I have no need for it, since I never download and run any file that I do not trust, I keep my OS and my browsers up to date and I stay away from questionable websites that may try to exploit my browser.

I haven't used an AV in nearly ten years, and I'm yet to be infected with any virus. But I do recommend and install AVG Free on client, family members' and friends' computers that are not as tech savvy as I would like them to be. ;)
