Laptop not powering up...

Ok, heres my problem. I have acquired an IBM thinkpad 570 laptop, which was free as long as I could fix it. I havent done much more in depth than building my own computer before, which is almost plug and play, and havent really done much repair work before, so I am asking you guys for some input on what the problem is. When I turn the computer on it just turns on and the screen stays white, like its powered on but nothing is on it  . I thought it might just be the OS was not working but the BIOS for the processor should have at least kicked in, and when I set an install disc for the OS nothing happened on screen. it seems that all the hardware is in working order, but all i am getting is this white screen. can someone help me out? I would appreciate any help I can get...

hmmm......when you power up the computer, does it sound like its running?..because if it is not that could mean mobo trouble especially due to the fact you cant get into your bios
and it could be a video card issue...
