laptop or desktop problem

Hello guys, I am thinking about getting a new computer as my current one is not strong enough for everything I'd love to do with it. I was thinking about getting a desktop because you get a higher performance with a lower budget. The problem is I'm going to college in 2 years and it is reccomended to have a laptop there (obviously cant carry a desktop around :p) and I have some doubts about getting a desktop because of that. Any advice?

Depends what you want to do, when you want to buy and how much you have to spend really. If you're just looking to browse the web and write Word documents then you'd be fine with any laptop now which you could use at college, but remember that any machine you buy now will be 2 years old when you begin college. It sounds like you want a desktop to me, so if you can afford it get a desktop now and then buy a laptop in 2 years time when you begin college.

My budget would be around 900-1000€, I would use it for gaming, programming and a bit of video editing. Don't really have enough money to buy a good desktop and a good laptop 2 years later.

Might as well get a good gaming laptop now then and use it as a 'desktop replacement' or maybe with an external monitor for use at the desk.

Look at the high-end Lenovo Y series machines or perhaps a Dell XPS or something.

You want the best CPU and GPUs you can afford if you want to use it for gaming and video editing.

You should be able to get this in Continental Europe (I'm in the UK): http://shop.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y50/

Lenovo Y50 - £900 one:
i7 4710HQ
15.6" 1080p display
GeForce GTX 860M 4GB
16GB RAM
1TB SSHD

Something like that would be ideal for but be aware that the battery life won't be amazing, but that's the sacrifice you make for high performance.

Should still be a good gaming setup in 2 years. :good:

I checked out the lenovo y50, it's like 1150€ although the processor seems abit weak (2,4ghz normal speed). I came to an idea to upgrade my current computer:
-Intel i5 3,1ghz
-4gb ram
-1gb nvidia geforce gts 450

Thinking about upgrading gpu and ram (to 2gb and 8gb)

Well the CPU in the Lenovo is a quad-core i7. It's one of the fastest laptop CPUs you can get at the moment and is probably about the same faster than the i5 you've got in your desktop. :) You can't judge a CPU by clockspeed - doesn't work like that anymore.

You could upgrade your desktop and it could be a capable machine. The CPU is fine, but doubling the RAM and an upgrade to something like a GTX 760 or a Radeon R9 270X would be good upgrades. Depending what your power supply is you may need to upgrade that too to accommodate the faster GPU. Can you post full system specs?

I used to own a GTS 450 a few years ago. Didn't do much gaming so it was OK for me but might be a little weak for modern games at high resolutions these days.

yeh i know the cache and cores are important too, but I also(ALSO! :p) judge a cpu by the speed :).

Intel Core i5 2400 - 4cores, 6MB cache 3,1ghz
MSI H67MA-E35 motherboard
Kingston DDR3 1x4GB 667MHz(low MHz number yeh)
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 1GB
1GB hard drive
not sure about the power supply - will check tomorrow

Well there are more important aspects to a CPU than the clockspeed alone. ;)

Your system looks alright. As said, upgrade the RAM and put a nice GPU in it and you will be set for a while. :)

Thanks for all the advices dudes, appreciate it :).

A newb question : does it matter what kind of RAM i have to buy except it must be DDR3? Can I buy a lets say Corsair's memory?
