Laptop ports shutdown

Hi, I plugged the USB Cable from the digitial camera to upload to pics to my laptop. But when I did the laptop just automatically shutdown. Now when I plug any USB device in it doesn't respond.

If I plug a mouse into the serial port it also does nothing.

What happend? Can I fix it?

I've seen this before on a laptop. I take it that the USB was probably broken before and shorted out your externals when you plugged it in. So whatever you plug in may not work anymore and may still make your computer shutdown or restart. I've seen it on a Compaq, where one side of inputs were all bad and the other side was still working- have you tried other ports to see what worked and didnt? Since you say you plugged into the serial port and didnt work, I'd say the motherboard has shorted out and would need to be replaced... that is if you want external connections to work. Don't know if it's an old computer or not, and if it's worth salvaging.

No ports on the laptop actually work. I have phoned the company and its covered for up to 3 years, which im glad, its an expensive laptop!
