laptop Problem

Greetings all,

..I have a Toshiba laptop model# A75-S229 3.2gh, 1 gb ram, etc, win xp pro sp3....broad band connection...

...the other day I went to access the net and found that I had no internet connection........all cables were good and connection was tested with other computers...I looked in system/devices and all appeared ok (no errors/reds)..

...I went into network connections and it states
"local area connection; - network cable unplugged"..(but gives me the right click drop down box to disable it but, not to repair it!).

**********************************************

..1394 connection "connected"...
**********************************************
then, wireless network connection; "not connected"

**********************************************
I reinstalled the lan driver which I had in it originally and no luck.

NOTE; I have a small program that when you click on it, it will give you the Ethernet adapter information, ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway, giving you buttons to renew, renew all, release all. I have clicked on it and have noticed that my ethernet adapter isn't listed in the adapter box by default. It says "atheros ar5004g wireless network". I hit the drop-down box and place the realtek rtl8139 listing in it and here is what i get.
IP1.jpg

**I read someplace here that it said "TCPIP not enabled"...HOW do I check it and or enable it?...HELP!

Right click on the lan connection in network connections and click on properties. On the general tab, make sure that internet protocol is listed and checked. Do the same thing for the wireless connection.

thanks for the reply......i have already done this and internet protocol is checked ..however, i do not see "wireless".....

You should have 3 connections listed in the network connections screen..

1. 1394 which is not used for internet
2. local area connection
3. wireless network connection

If you have a router, try using the wireless connection and connect to the router. But if you have a cable hooked up the ethernet connection on the pc and it still says cable disconnected either the port is bad, possibly bad driver or you are infected. Try using a different ethernet cable first.

**HAVE ALREADY DONE THAT AND HAVE USED THE SAME CABLE ON COMPUTER I AM TYPING ON

..I DON'T SEE PRACTICALLY ANY "ENTRIES" IN TE PICT I POSTED, PROBABLY BECAUSE COMPUTER DOESN'T RECOGNIZE CABLE/INTERNET CONNECTION(/).

So are you saying you don't have a router? If you don't have a router, then you can't get wireless connection.

It seems your network card is the laptop is bad.

thanks again for the reply!...not sure if i have one or better yet, is it part of the motherboard and not "changeable"? (this is a laptop we are speaking about and has no cards that slip in. cat 5 connection in in the back)

Are there more than one computer that get online at the same time? If so, then you have a router. If you have the only computer then you don't have a router most likely.

Have you tried going into device manager and removing the driver and then rebooting to see if it will reinstall and work? Have you had any storms lately that might have knocked out either the port on your laptop or your broadband modem? Are you using cable or Dsl?

**NO, I HAVE ONLY 1 INTERNET CONNECTION AND NO ROUTER
If so, then you have a router.
**RESPECTFULLY, I HAVE A ROUTER, KNOW WHAT IT IS, AND HOW TO USE IT. IT IS NOT IN LINE AT ALL.:)

**SEE ABOVE STATEMENT

Have you tried going into device manager and removing the driver and then rebooting to see if it will reinstall and work?
**YES, NO GOOD

Have you had any storms lately that might have knocked out either the port on your laptop or your broadband modem?
**MODEM IS FINE OR ELSE I WOULD NOT BE TALKING NOW...GRIN..NO KNOWN STORMS...AS I SAID, BROADBAND AND NOT DSL.

Are you using cable or Dsl?[/QUOTE]
**CABLE (BROADBAND)

I would say its a bad port on the laptop then. You might want to have a computer shop confirm that though. Is the laptop under warranty?

THANKS FOR REPLY..
yeah, probably.....no warranty.....i wish this had a card to replace but, appears not since it is a laptop...i wonder if i have a slide in laptop card someplace?...humn....i will probably have to send it in for a new motherboard...

Or invest in a router and use wireless internet.

**A ROUTER WON'T DO ME ANY GOOD IF THE MOTHER BOARD IS BAD...I OWN 2 ROUTERS BUT, DO NOT USED THEM....I ALREADY TESTED THEM WITH MY PROBLEM AND THERE WAS NO CHANGE...

I doubt that the wireless and the onboard nic are both bad. You may want to think about doing a fresh install of windows to see if that fixes the issue, or doing a system restore back to a day that everything was working fine.

**YES, I GET "SQUAT" FROM BOTH

You may want to think about doing a fresh install of windows to see if that fixes the issue,
**RATHER EXTREME!

or doing a system restore back to a day that everything was working fine.
**I DID 3 OF THEM WITH NO LUCK!

.......if you have been following this thread, i had stated/implied that both the hard wired and wireless internet capabilities are not working.......i also don't want to keep throwing money at this thing to "get around and existing problem", but want to fix/solve teh problem.......i will most likely get the motherboard replaced......
