laptop processor options

I am looking at getting a newer laptop to use on the side, assuming that the hp gets fixed soon. I have a question about the available processors. the one im looking at comes standard with the AMD V series. I dont like the single core processors (haven't tried the AMD, but the P4 is sluggish under multiple windows.)
the other options offered are the Athlon x2, turion x2, phenom x2 and phenom x3.
I will be using it for school, and light gaming (mostly older games, like MOH and CNC).

The AMD V series are sketchy. I would at least go with a dual core, especially since you are buying it new and want it to last a bit I assume ;)

Its a compaq, it wont last. But its reasonable at least.

dual core is what I was thinking also.

Speaking in terms of program requirements, if a game for say needs a 2.8 single core, would it also need a 2.8 dual core, or would a slower dual core, like 2.3 work??
