Laptop ram usage

Hi,

I've got a simple question for u experts but its pretty important to me.

My laptop has 4gb ram, how much ram would normally be free to use when the laptop is running nothing but the start up essentials?

I have a program called SmartRam from IObit and the max it ever says is 2000ish MB Ram free.

Is that normal? or is there something I can do to unlock the other half of the ram? thanks very much

800-1000 megs used in vista smells pretty typical, you probably cant do much better than that on a 32 big OS, you could free up the extra gig if its a dual channel kit but honestly it may not be worth it

If you have a 32 bit OS, the most you can use is around 3.25. Also, you may have alot starting up. Do you have the startup items disabled, except for what you need? Between having a bunch of things starting up, and just the fact that it is Vista, I would bet that you would have onlt 2ish gigs left. But I can help you with your startup if you need.
