I have a Dell Latitude D430 that freezes randomly. It started a few months ago when my girl brought me the laptop back (she was borrowing it for a few months) and told me that it was randomly freezing and shutting down. I started to work with the laptop and I had it on for about 20 minutes and it was working fine until it froze on me. At first I thought it might be overheating so i let it sit overnight then tried booting it up in the morning. I was able to get to the login screen and get to the desktop. When i tried to get to the event viewer using the run command it froze before i could finish typing out the command.
I just want to clarify that this is not a program freezing or anything. The mouse and keyboard no longer respond and anything that was going on at the time stops. The only way to get out is to perform a hard reboot. I tried rebooting multiple times over the next hour or so. Sometimes it would stay on for 30 minutes before freezing then another time it would freeze in less than 5.
My next step was to try and reimage the laptop. It was running Vista when I bought it so I installed XP. After the install it seemed to run fine but after a few days it started happening again. Same exact problem from before with the same symptoms. Reimaged the laptop again putting it back to Vista. and the same thing. Worked fine for about an hour until it froze up. Again i tried to get into the event viewer and it froze up before I could type in the command.
My plan is to next try replacing the harddrive but before I go out an buy a part that might not fix the issue I want to see if anyone has any ideas. Please ask any questions you need and feel free to make suggestions. It has just become a little frustrating.
