Laptop Recommendations?

HP has been getting better these days. I used to own an HP laptop not too long ago and it was solid.

I think you picked out a good machine there.

It looks like the Toshiba is on sale, while the HP model is not. The only difference is the CPU, but the i5 is definitely a step up from the i3.

If you're going to buy a new laptop, do it now because who knows how long that sale will last.

Thanks Calibretto, I'll have to think about it. Part of me wants to go with the HP but the other half is set on the Toshiba.

I bought my wife an HP dv6 and I really like it...very solid build quality. I don't regret the purchase at all. I am thinking about buying one myself.

The cooling on it is a little sub standard...it can get hot. Her processor (Phenom II x2 @ 2.9GHz) idles at about 55-60c and Intel CPU burn it gets up to 75-80c. Sometimes it can get so warm...the whole keyboard heats up. It has never crashed or failed in anyway. Just something to know before you buy.

Yeah, I think I saw someone post a review saying that the keyboard heats up a bit. I wonder if there's a fix to that to keep it from overheating?

I took the bottom off and was going to AS5 everything (I did on My Sager and saw huge improvements) but it was far beyond my level. When you take the bottom off...all the hardware is between the motherboard and keyboard. It's not like a normal laptop where everything is exposed when the bottom is removed.

The plastic grill cover for the fan has very thin slits to suck air through...I thought about cutting those open a bit along with the thin slits for the exhaust. But...I don't really want to ruin the warranty :D My wife would kill me if I messed it up :o Maybe a decent cooling pad would help?

Even though it gets hot...it runs fine and never BSOD or anything. I burned my wife's with Intel CPU burn and OCCT for the graphics card...just to see if it would crash :P Ran hot but never failed after 45 minutes.

I also put a WD Scorpio Black hard drive in it...they run a little hotter than a normal laptop hard drive also.

Yeah, I have an Acer Laptop at home and it has the same setup where its hard to get to everything. I think only laptops that aren't brand like HP, Dell, Acer, etc have a better setup internally. I'll have to think about it though.
