Laptop/router compatabilty?

I have recently purchased a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router, model number: WRT54G and am having problems setting it up for use with my laptop. I currently have Telewest Broadband connection to my home pc, operating on Windows 98 and an Amilo Pro V2030 laptop, operating on Windows XP. The laptop is wireless enabled. Have run CD supplied and get to a point where an error message reads "the router can not be connected, check all cables/connections are secure or reset via the router reset button". Which I have done, several times, to no avail.

I'm beginning to wonder if it is not compatible with the rest of the set up.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I had that router totally shut off the wireless and not let me back in to change settings, so I got a belkin. Anyways, the best way to try to get a connection is to turn broadcast on and any security (WPA for example) off. Once you get it connected, you can and should tighten the security up.

Shouldn't be a compatability problem as they are bascially backwards compatable. Only problem would be if you have 802.11A in your laptop rather than B or G(which is quite rare)
